Palaces, history, and hanbok
At the city’s heart, grand royal palaces like Gyeongbokgung anchor Korea’s history, with a daily changing-of-the-guard ceremony. A fun local tradition: rent a colorful hanbok, the traditional dress, to wear while you explore the palace grounds, which also gets you in free.
The food
Reason enough to come. Sizzling Korean barbecue grilled at your table, comforting bibimbap, fiery stews, and the endless little side dishes called banchan. Do not miss the street food and market stalls, especially the legendary Gwangjang Market in Seoul, one of the best casual eating experiences in the world.
K-beauty and skincare
Korea is the global capital of skincare, and for many travelers it is a genuine draw. The multi-step routines and glass-skin trend that took over the world started here, and shopping the Korean beauty shops, from the giant chains to tiny specialty stores, is a highlight in itself. It is one of the most-requested parts of a Seoul trip right now, and easy to build in.
Beyond Seoul: day trips and Busan
From Seoul, popular day trips include the DMZ, the tense and fascinating border with North Korea, and the pretty Nami Island. Further afield, the seaside city of Busan offers beaches like Haeundae, the colorful hillside Gamcheon Culture Village, and the bustling Jagalchi fish market, all an easy ride on the fast KTX train.
It looks simple until you try to book it.
