In South Bend, the University of Notre Dame is a bucket list for college-football fans, a game-day Saturday, the Golden Dome, and “Touchdown Jesus” are the whole experience. The campus is beautiful year-round.
Indianapolis is a serious sports city, above all the Indianapolis 500, the greatest spectacle in racing, at the legendary Motor Speedway. Time a trip around race weekend and it is unforgettable.
Northern Indiana, around Shipshewana, is one of the largest Amish and Mennonite communities in the country, think handmade crafts, huge flea markets, hearty home cooking, and horse-and-buggy roads. It is a genuinely peaceful, unplugged getaway.
It looks simple until you try to book it. The race runs the last weekend of May and the big game-day Saturdays are set close to a year out, with tickets and nearby lodging that are gone long before most people start looking, and my local vetted partners on the ground hold the access you cannot arrange on your own.
