Disneyland: How to Plan It
Disneyland is Walt’s original park, and it has a charm Walt Disney World simply cannot replicate. It is also far more compact, which makes it perfect for a long weekend, often folded into a bigger California trip. Here is how I plan it.
Two parks, side by side
Disneyland Resort is two parks a short walk apart: Disneyland Park, the original, and Disney California Adventure, home to Pixar Pier, Avengers Campus, and a genuinely excellent food-and-wine scene. A Park Hopper ticket lets you bounce between them in a single day, which is the way to do it here.
Where to stay
There are three hotels right at the resort. My pick is Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, the most convenient and the nicest, with its own private entrance straight into California Adventure. The Disneyland Hotel and Pixar Place Hotel round out the on-site options. If you would rather save, there are good-value hotels within walking distance of the gates, and staying a little farther out in Orange County is a nice low-key choice too.
Lightning Lane at Disneyland
Disneyland uses the same Lightning Lane structure as Walt Disney World, Multi Pass and Single Pass, booked in the Disneyland app the morning it opens. The attractions differ, but the strategy is the same, so my Lightning Lane guide explains exactly how it works.
How many days you need
Three to four days is the sweet spot: enough to enjoy both parks unhurried, with a break or a beach day in between. Weekdays and off-peak seasons are far calmer than weekends and holidays.
Disneyland vs. Disney World
If you have a full week and want the all-in resort-bubble vacation with four parks, that is Walt Disney World. If you want the original magic in a few compact, walkable days, usually paired with a California trip, Disneyland is your answer. Many of my clients do Disneyland precisely because it fits alongside LA and San Diego.
The part that trips people up. The ride-reservation passes go live at 7 AM sharp, and the most popular ones can sell out within minutes, so the difference between a smooth day and a stressful one is often decided before breakfast. On busy weekends and holiday weeks the margin is even thinner.
