If there is one city built for the holidays, it is Vienna. The imperial capital glows all December, and its Christmas markets are among the most famous in the world. You do not have to travel on Christmas Day to feel the magic, the whole season sparkles. Here is how I would plan it.
Vienna’s markets are the heart of it. The grand one at Rathausplatz, in front of the fairytale City Hall, is the showstopper, with an ice path through the park. Do not miss the more atmospheric markets at Schönbrunn and Belvedere palaces, and the artsy one at Spittelberg. Wander with a mug of hot glühwein (mulled wine) and browse handmade crafts and ornaments.
The palaces and museums are extra magical in winter, and it is peak season for the city’s legendary classical music, think holiday concerts and, on New Year’s, the world-famous Vienna Philharmonic. Here is the classic Vienna Christmas mistake. Many of the markets wind down around December 26, so arriving between Christmas and New Year expecting them in full swing is a common miss, and the marquee Advent and New Year concerts sell out months ahead. Timing it right, and holding those seats, is exactly what I plan around with my partners on the ground.
