Family Travel: Planning Trips with Kids by Age

Traveling with kids is one of my favorite things to plan, and here is the honest truth: the right trip depends far more on your child’s age than on the destination. For me it comes down to two things, the logistics (strollers, keeping little ones safe, and how well they listen) and the memories. I do not worry much about whether a toddler will remember the trip, because these experiences help them grow, and they give you memories of them at every age. Here is how I plan it, by age.

Under 5: it is all about logistics

Here is the truth most people get backwards: under one is actually easy. Babies are portable, they are not walking yet, and, my favorite window, six months to about a year is wonderful for Disney (far easier before they walk, and their reactions are priceless). The hardest stretch is one to two, when they are walking, into everything, and do not always listen. That is exactly when all-inclusive resorts and cruises shine: everything is contained and safe, there are kids’ clubs, and you never have to go far. Lean on them through the toddler years.

5 to 10: it depends on your child

This is where it opens up, and it depends on your child. You can absolutely keep leaning on all-inclusives and cruises, now they are old enough to love the kids’ clubs, the pools, and the characters, and you still get real downtime. Or, if your child is ready, you can start opening up kid-friendly adventures. The key at every age, but especially here, is age-appropriate activities: whatever the trip, build in things scaled to what they can actually do and enjoy.

10 to 15: adventure opens up

Once kids hit about ten, the world opens up. They can handle adventures, more active, more immersive trips, and they truly engage with them. One Disney note for parents: if the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique makeover is on your list, do it before your child turns 13, there is an age cutoff.

15 and up: almost adult travel

Teenagers can do just about any trip you can, and this is a beautiful age for bigger adventures and cultural travel, the kind of trips that shape them right before they leave the nest. The trick is giving them a little independence and plenty of things they genuinely find cool.

The family-sized pieces are the ones that sell out first. Connecting rooms, suites that actually sleep four, and the kids-club cabins on the best sailings go months before everything else, school-break weeks are booked against the whole country at once, and children's passports can take weeks to arrive. Miss one window and the trip quietly shrinks to what is left, so I lock the dates, the right rooms, and the age cutoffs early and keep the moving parts off your plate.

Why plan a family trip with me

I do not believe kids are ever too young to travel. My job is to match the trip, the pace, and the activities to your kids’ ages, choose the family-friendly resorts, cruises, and hotels with the right kids’ clubs and safety, and keep the logistics off your plate so you can just be present. Whether it is Disney, an all-inclusive, a cruise, or a big adventure, I plan it in English or Español.
